Resumo: | The purpose of this article is to examine the historiographical discourse of 90 years of cinema: a Brazilian adventure (1988), a television documentary directed by Eduardo Escorel and Roberto Feith, produced by Metavideo and aired by the extinct TV Manchete. The script for the TV series was entrusted to documentary filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho. Among the topics addressed here, we study: methodological issues related to the writing of a panoramic history of Brazilian cinema; Cinema Novo as a teleological framework; the critical look around potential “revisions” of the past of Brazilian cinema; and the trend toward cinematic realism that underlies and gives coherence to the lines of continuity of a diversified and deviant history. Two examples of innovation that the series brings to the field of historiography on Brazilian cinema are pointed out. The first concerns the emphasis given to the practice of “cavação”. The second is related to the revaluation of the comedy Balança mas não cai (1953), as a decisive step in the trajectory of Nelson Pereira dos Santos towards the realization of Rio, 40 graus (1955). |
