Resumo: Pilates exercises have been popular as a mode of exercise not only for rehabilitation but also for improving overall health. However, there are no reports in the literature regarding the energy cost of exercise based on the method, especially when compare mat or equipment use. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the energy cost, HR and BP in Pilates sessions in the mat and on the equipment. For this, were selected 18 volunteers to perform both Pilates sessions (mat and equipment), in different days. The variables analyzed were VO2 through indirect calorimetry, and subsequent calculation of the energy cost in METs and Kcal/min-1, blood lactate, HR and BP. ANOVA for repeated measures (Split-Plot) with post hoc Bonferroni analysis was used to compare the differences between the conditions and the level of significance was set at p <0.05. The results in the present study on mat condition can be classified as very light exercise with energy cost values of 1.9 ?? 0.2 METs and in the equipment condition with values of 2.6 ?? 0.3 METs. Likewise, have found a value of 1.9 Kcal/min-1 on the mat session, and 2.6 Kcal/min-1 on the equipment session. The VO2 remained elevated after exercise for both sessions, with significant values only for the mat (pre 3.1 ?? 0.8, post 4.3 ?? 0.7). The blood lactate concentration showed no significant increase after the end of the solo sessions and apparatus. HR analysis in this study confirmed the low intensity of Pilates sessions, average HR solo session remained at 53% of maximum heart rate, and the device session 49%. Systolic and diastolic BP did not present higher values in relation to the rest. It is suggested that a training program using this protocol with exercises based on the Pilates method is a choice for the initial stage of intervention in sedentary individuals, the elderly or those with cardiovascular disease.
