Resumo: The knowledge management is seen as an effective necessity for the development of organizations. In higher education institutions - HEI is no different, knowledge is its main product, having in its essence the creation, dissemination, transfer and sharing of knowledge to develop people and generate continuous innovation. In this sense, the objective of this study was to analyze the scenario of knowledge management practices adopted in higher education in Brazil, as well as the degree of reach and stage of implementation within the institutions. The method used was quantitative, by applying a questionnaire to researchers / institutional prosecutors of HEIs throughout Brazil, the final sample was 124 participants. The degree of reach and implementation stage of the knowledge management practices in the areas of people management, organizational processes and information technology were measured. The results indicated that the scope and stage of implementation of KM practices in higher education institutions is still at an elementary level, and advances in the process of implementation and reach in the departments are needed so that the HEIs have greater maturity in the processes of management of higher education. people, organizational and information technology, which in turn influence the organizational performance of HEIS.
