This study aims to analyze to what extent Zumbi dos Palmares Memorial has been appropriated by the black community of Teresina-PI as a non-specific leisure instrument through the perception of the people who make up the social movements which lead the activities in that space. The methodology consists of a qualitative approach and descriptive research, using technical procedures for data collection based on three types: bibliographic and documentary research, as well as case study about the appropriation of Zumbi dos Palmares Memorial. The research field was Zumbi dos Palmares Memorial, a reference space of the black community, located in the central area of Teresina -PI. The main means for capturing empirical material was the interview, along with documentary clippings to enhance the steadiness of the collected speeches. The script was semi-structured with 33 open questions distributed in 05 different categorical groups about central themes on appropriation process research applied among the 05 main representatives of the black movements in Piau?? who were responsible for the appropriation. For data analysis, the answers were grouped by speech similarities and then organized by common categories, composing a total of 05 categories, separated into: origins; concerns; fights; difficulties and achievements. Through the results it was possible to identify that the origins of black militancy occurred in different ways (religious engagement, university groups, family gatherings), all of them with the thought of fighting structured racism in society. Racist behaviors demonstrated by the tribute paid to Domingos Jorge Velho, who is a fierce killer in the view of the black community, have promoted countless concerns that would culminate with the ultimate goal: the appropriation of that space, once a school and now transformed into a place of valorization and diffusion of black culture. There were struggles of different ideological orders in the media field and mobilization in public spaces for the appropriation of that site, enhanced by political sponsorship. The main difficulty was the disagreement of thoughts and postures within the black movement, as well as the prejudice of some segments of society. With the conquest, different types of leisure are available (physical, intellectual, artistic, etc.) for blacks, in addition to ethnic and racial identification, reducing prejudiced attitudes despite the racism shown by some. We concluded that the movement of appreciation of the black community with the offer of free leisure activities within the Memorial is possible only because social movements organized themselves for struggling in pursuit of rights. Without this claim, perhaps such victories would not have happened, and racist behaviors would not be faced with such a strength and determination, as part of our society sometimes justifies racist practices as being right and acceptable.
