Between divine and money: analysis of magistic services in a Candomblé terreiro (worship place)

Resumo: This article aims to analyze the main material exchanges in a Candomblé terreiro (worship place) in Bocaiuva, MG, from the perspective of clientelism, that is, situations involving the collection of money for the services offered: works of “love tying” and cowrie shells divination. Methodologically, we proceeded by bibliographic research, participant observation, and interviews from May to August 2018. In addition to presenting generalities about Candomblé and some current paradigms that surrounds it, the article analyzes these magical services as social and economic relations present in the life of this terreiro. The research showed that Candomblé and its supporters express not only religious but market relations with each other and with the outside public. In this case, money and magical services are not “separate spheres” or “hostile worlds” but structures where agents perform “good combinations”.

Metodológicamente, procedemos mediante revisión bibliográfica, observación participante y entrevistas en el período de mayo a agosto de 2018. Además de presentar generalidades sobre Candomblé y algunos paradigmas actuales que lo rodean, el artículo analiza dichos servicios mágicos como relaciones sociales y económicas presentes en la vida de este terreiro. La investigación mostró que Candomblé y sus seguidores expresan no solo relaciones religiosas, sino también de mercado entre ellos y con el público fuera del terreiro. En el caso estudiado, los servicios de dinero y magia no son “esferas separadas” o “mundos hostiles”, sino estructuras donde los agentes realizan “buenas combinaciones”.O objetivo do artigo é analisar as principais trocas materiais em um terreiro de Candomblé em Bocaiuva, MG, na perspectiva do clientelismo, ou seja, situações que envolvem a cobrança em dinheiro pelos serviços ofertados: trabalhos de “amarração de amor” e jogo de búzios. Metodologicamente, procedemos por pesquisa bibliográfica, observação participante e realização de entrevistas no período de maio a agosto de 2018. Além de apresentar generalidades a respeito do Candomblé e alguns paradigmas atuais que o rondam, o artigo analisa os referidos serviços magísticos enquanto relações sociais e econômicas presentes na vida deste terreiro. A pesquisa demonstrou que o Candomblé e seus adeptos exprimem relações não apenas religiosas, mas mercadológicas entre si e com o público exterior ao terreiro.
