This master’s research aims to analyze the conceptions of bilingual education and the acquisition of the Brazilian Sign Language in a Brazilian Sign Language and Portuguese Bilingual School, focusing on its Political and Pedagogical Program and official documents. As for the specific objectives, the aim is to: (a) discuss the main definitions and counterpoints between Special Education, from the inclusive perspective of deaf students in regular education, and Deaf Education, from the bilingual education conception, in their own schools, based on national and international guidelines that regulate education; (b) research how the process of teaching Brazilian Sign Language to hearing children takes place, in the conception of bilingual education; (c) analyze the Brazilian Federal Law no. 14.191/2021, in the terms of bilingual education for deaf students in Brazil and the inclusion of Portuguese and Brazilian Sign Language bilingual education, established as a modality by the national general and specific legislation, exploring how it is offered, depending on the type of school, bilingual or regular. The research is qualitative, exploratory and is based on a bibliographic and documentary survey. From the approach to the history of Deaf Education, going through the main conceptions and focusing on the bilingual perspective, the research was oriented towards investigating the teaching of Brazilian Sign Language as a second language to hearing children in a bilingual school, using its Political and Pedagogical Program and Federal Law No. 14.191/2021 content. We identified the importance and potential results of school contact between deaf and hearing children, in the process of teaching and learning Brazilian Sign Language as second language for hearing children, in a context of bilingual education, which strengthens diversity and interculturality in school and society.
