Social Service and the social determination of healthcare in times of pandemic

Resumo: The purpose of this article is to reflect on the importance of the debate about the social determination of healthcare for the professional action of social workers that is related to healthcare policy. It is a theoretical essay based on books, periodicals and published articles. Social service is a profession actively involved in healthcare policy, particularly through the health reform movement. Based on an ethical-political project, the profession has defended the principles of the Unified Healthcare System (SUS) and the guarantee of social rights. The coronavirus pandemic challenges social workers to reaffirm their ethical and professional principles when conducting their professional actions, in an effort to guarantee social justice and the social rights of citizens.

Trata-se de um ensaio teórico com base em livros, revistas e artigos publicados. O serviço social é uma profissão atuante na política de saúde, em especial a partir do movimento da reforma sanitária. Com base no projeto ético-político a profissão tem defendido os princípios do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) e da garantia dos direitos sociais.
