Resumo: This paper analyzes how social workers in the CAPS team mobilize families and their cultures in mental health care. Qualitative, exploratory-descriptive research. Data collection took place through semi-structured interviews and observation of the work process social workers who worked with family members assisted in CAPS in six municipalities in Santa Catarina. The data were analyzed through content analysis. As a result, we found that culture is present in the lives of families, its importance in the work process is recognized, but it remains in the space of recognition, because inserting family culture in mental health care is not yet a reality. In the relationship between social workers and family members, the overvaluation of diagnoses and the medicalization of life is latent. Favoring a scenario for asylum practices and the absence of an educational-communicative action, where the precepts of Psychiatric Reform would be present.

Pesquisa qualitativa, do tipo exploratória-descritiva.
