Statistical tables in Chilean textbooks in Natural Sciences

Resumo: This research corresponds to a descriptive qualitative study, which analyses the presence of statistical tables in Chilean textbooks for the subject of Natural Sciences at the Primary Education level (6 to 9 years old). For this purpose, a content analysis was carried out, considering as categories of analysis the types of statistical tables and the types of activities in which statistical tables are used. The results show that in the 3rd and 4th levels (8 and 9 years old), the greatest number of activities related to statistical tables are concentrated. On the other hand, it is observed that the table with the greatest presence is the data table, while the most recurrent activity that students have to carry out is reading data. Finally, the analysis shows that the use of statistical tables goes beyond what is established in the curricular framework for the subject of mathematics, since it is used as a resource for learning and understanding natural phenomena.

Para ello, se realizó un análisis de contenido, considerando como categorías de análisis a los tipos de tablas estadísticas y tipos de actividades en las que se trabajan con las tablas estadísticas. Los resultados muestran que en los niveles de 3° y 4° (8 y 9 años), es donde se concentran la mayor cantidad de actividades relacionadas con las tablas estadísticas. Por otro lado, se observa que la tabla con mayor presencia es la tabla de datos, mientras que la actividad más recurrente, que deben realizar los estudiantes, es leer datos.
