Resumo: We are rapidly moving towards the end of planet Earth as we know it, and education under the STS perspective has shown to be a promising way to face the current challenges and dilemmas in the environmental, scientific and technological fields. Green Chemistry (GC) presents itself as a possibility for the evolution of Chemistry from the perspective of sustainability, and several researchers have sought to offer foundations for a GC education from the STS perspective. This work discusses the intertwined relationship between STS education and the approach to the nature, dimensions and consequences of the environmental crisis, from the perspective of sustainability, taking as reference possible contributions of GC. Additionally, some assumptions on and bases for GC teaching are exposed in line with the critical STS perspective, interrelating them with some of Paulo Freire's educational assumptions, in order to defend a critical and humanizing scientific and technological education.
