Perceptions of High School students about the presence of women in Science

Resumo: Although there is some optimism regarding the participation of women in science, researches point to several obstacles to achieving equality in the scientific field. In this regard, the school stands out as a privileged space for intervention, helping students and teachers to break with gender stereotypes. In view of the historical process of exclusion of women, this study aims to investigate the perceptions of students in the 2nd grade of high school in a state public school in the city of Goiânia/GO about the presence of women in science, in order to identify the proximity of the topic in basic education. The research has a qualitative approach, using thematic content analysis. The results indicate that students have a stereotyped view of science and scientists, associating science with men, and have difficulty in naming the names of female scientists, especially Brazilian women. Furthermore, the theme women in science is not common to them, especially at school, which reinforces the need to insert this theme in the school context.

En ese aspecto, se destaca la escuela como espacio privilegiado de intervención auxiliando estudiantes y maestros a romper con los estereotipos de género. Teniendo en cuenta el proceso histórico de exclusión de las mujeres, este trabajo tiene como objetivo investigar las percepciones de estudiantes del 2do grado de la secundaria de una escuela pública estatal del municipio de Goiânia/GO sobre la presencia de las mujeres en la ciencia, con vistas a identificar la proximidad del tema en la educación básica. La pesquisa posee abordaje cualitativo utilizando el análisis del contenido temático. Los resultados indican que los estudiantes poseen una visión estereotipada de ciencia y científicos, asociando la ciencia a hombres, y tienen dificultad de nombrar científicas mujeres, principalmente las brasileñas. Además, la temática “mujeres en la ciencia” no es común a ellos, sobre todo en la escuela, lo que refuerza la necesidad de inserción de ese tema en el contexto escolar.Embora haja certo otimismo com relação à participação da mulher na ciência, pesquisas apontam diversos entraves para o alcance da igualdade. Nesse aspecto, destaca-se a escola como espaço privilegiado de intervenção, auxiliando estudantes e professores a romper com os estereótipos de gênero. Tendo em vista o processo histórico de exclusão das mulheres, este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar as percepções de estudantes da 2ª série do Ensino Médio de uma escola pública estadual do Município de Goiânia/GO sobre a presença das mulheres na ciência, com vistas a identificar a proximidade do tema na educação básica. A pesquisa possui abordagem qualitativa, utilizando a análise de conteúdo temática. Os resultados indicam que os estudantes possuem uma visão estereotipada de ciência e cientistas, associando a ciência a homens, e têm dificuldade de citar nomes de cientistas mulheres, principalmente as brasileiras.
