Resumo: This article is the result of a dissertation, which discusses the use of educational games in the development of mental calculus. This study has the aim of promoting students' self-confidence and autonomy in relation to mathematics, especially in overcoming the difficulties related to the four fundamental operations. This research is characterized by action-research since the researcher was also the teacher of the class and, therefore, experienced  different situations and questions that led to this investigation and the definition of the research problem - What are the implications of the use of educational games for the development of mental calculus? To this end, the concepts of mental calculation are discussed, in order to overcome the notions of common sense. This article presents a game that was applied to 15 students from the State Program New Learning Opportunities. The results indicate that the didactic game as a resource of mental calculation in face of the Problem Solving methodology, provided the development of the students communication and argumentation capacity in relation to Mathematics. Furthermore, the students began to reflect and to communicate their actions and strategies, becoming protagonists in building up their knowledge.
