Resumo: Generally, at the elementary school early years, activities focused at the perception of geometric forms and in the final years and teaching of geometry tends to be more theoretical. However, it is important that experimental activities and conceptualization be present at any level of education. Thus, in this article we present and discuss a sequence of activities related to the study of quadrilaterals that was carried out by fifth year students of elementary school. They have obtained the figures that represented each type of quadrilateral by means of folds and cutouts, made artistic works with these figures, explored their properties from the symmetry axes, socialized their discoveries, then built quadrilaterals in the geoplan and represented the constructions realized on dotted paper. The research has achieved that manipulation is possible and necessary since the earliest years, so the construction and the drawings be worked in an articulated way with the theoretical knowledge of the geometry. It was also verified that interactions and negotiations of meanings play a fundamental role in the learning process.

No entanto, é importante que as atividades experimentais e a conceituação estejam presentes em qualquer nível de ensino. Assim, neste artigo apresenta-se e discute-se uma sequência de atividades relativa ao estudo dos quadriláteros que foi realizada por estudantes do quinto ano do Ensino Fundamental. Eles obtiveram as figuras que representavam cada tipo de quadrilátero por meio de dobraduras e recortes, fizeram trabalhos artísticos com essas figuras, exploraram suas propriedades a partir da obtenção dos eixos de simetria, socializaram suas descobertas, depois construíram quadriláteros no geoplano e representaram as construções realizadas no papel pontilhado. A pesquisa evidenciou que é possível e necessário que, desde os anos iniciais, a manipulação, a construção e os desenhos sejam trabalhados de forma articulada com o conhecimento teórico da geometria.
