Coastal Conservation Units in textbooks: contributions to Critical Scientific Education

Resumo: Coastal ecosystems have great socio-environmental relevance. Their territories, which shape the ways of life of human populations, are the scene of many disputes and suffer increasing environmental degradation. Considering the central role of the textbook in the teaching-learning process at Brazilian schools, the present work aims to evaluate the approach of Coastal Conservation Units in textbooks used in public schools in Aracaju, SE, Northeast Brazil, based on the assumptions of the Science, Technology and Society. The analysis was carried out using the Science, Technology and Society Assessment Tool (FACTS) and points to a superficial treatment of socio-scientific issues that, although recognizing different dimensions of these issues, do not develop them in a way that encourages students to take action in their communities. In addition, a gap is observed in these books' approach of beach, estuarine and mangrove environments, which can impact the contextualization of relevant themes for local communities in a costal city.

Sus territorios, que configuran los modos de vida de las poblaciones humanas, son escenario de múltiples disputas y sufren una creciente degradación ambiental. Teniendo en cuenta el rol central del libro didáctico en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de las escuelas brasileñas, el presente trabajo evalúa el enfoque de las Unidades de Conservación Costera en los libros didácticos utilizados en las escuelas públicas de Aracaju/SE a partir de los presupuestos Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad. El análisis se realizó utilizando el Instrumento de Evaluación de Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad (FACTS) e indicó un tratamiento superficial de las cuestiones sociocientíficas que, aunque reconozca distintas dimensiones de estos temas, no les desarrolla de manera que anime a los estudiantes a actuar en sus comunidades. Además, se observa una brecha en el abordaje de los ambientes de playa, estuario y de manglares, lo que puede impactar en la contextualización de temas relevantes para las comunidades locales.Os ecossistemas costeiros têm grande relevância socioambiental. Seus territórios, que moldam os modos de vida de populações humanas, são palcos de muitas disputas e sofrem degradação ambiental crescente. Considerando o papel central do livro didático no processo de ensino aprendizagem das escolas brasileiras, o presente trabalho avalia a abordagem de Unidades de Conservação Costeiras, em livros didáticos utilizados em escolas da rede pública em Aracaju/SE, com base nos pressupostos do enfoque Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade. A análise foi feita utilizando a Ferramenta Avaliativa Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (FACTS) e aponta um tratamento insuficientemente aprofundado de questões sociocientíficas que, embora reconheçam diferentes dimensões dessas questões, não as desenvolvem de forma a incentivar a atuação dos alunos em suas comunidades.
