A bibliographic review on the use of data analysis software: a look at Octave

Resumo: This bibliographic review aims to investigate how the software GNU Octave, an open source and free distribution, has been used as a didactic-pedagogical resource in the areas of Basic Education and High Education. The choice of Octave is justified because it is free software - a characteristic that makes its use viable in different educational institutions without the need of using additional financial resources - as well as because it is a computational tool compatible with several operating systems. For that, national and international publications in the sciences teaching were analyzed, seeking to answer questions that would make it possible to recognize the state of the art regarding the use of Octave in the teaching of mathematics and physics. Examples of such questions are: (i) what is the nature of these studies; (ii) what levels of education are related; and (iii) what content is covered. We employ data from Qualis Capes A1, A2 and B1 classification journals throughout the publication period of each of the journals considered. Ten publications, which included theoretical studies, didactic proposals and developed practices, were selected and analyzed. The main results obtained indicate: understandings about the use of free distribution software for teaching-learning practices; the need to integrate this type of tool in teaching activities; and relationships with teacher training in these pedagogical practices.

La elección de Octave se justifica porque se trata de un software libre, característica que hace viable su uso en diferentes instituciones educativas sin necesidad de utilizar recursos económicos adicionales, ya que es una herramienta computacional compatible con varios sistemas operativos. Para eso, se analizó publicaciones nacionales e internacionales en el área de la enseñanza de las ciencias, buscando dar respuesta a preguntas que permitieron reconocer el estado del arte en cuanto al uso de Octave en la enseñanza de las matemáticas y la física. Ejemplos de tales preguntas: (i) cuál es la naturaleza de estos trabajos; (ii) qué niveles de educación están relacionados; y (iii) qué contenido se cubre. Para la recolección de datos se seleccionó los periódicos de clasificación Qualis Capes A1, A2 y B1 y se adoptó como marco temporal el período completo de publicación de cada una de las revistas consideradas. Fue seleccionado y analizado diez publicaciones, que incluyeron trabajos teóricos, propuestas didácticas y prácticas desarrolladas. Los principales resultados obtenidos indican: comprensión sobre el uso de software de distribución libre para prácticas de enseñanza-aprendizaje; la necesidad de integrar este tipo de herramientas en las actividades docentes; y relaciones con la formación del profesorado en estas prácticas pedagógicas.Esta revisão bibliográfica tem por objetivo investigar como o software, de código aberto e livre distribuição, GNU Octave vem sendo utilizado como recurso didático-pedagógico nos âmbitos da Educação Básica e do Ensino Superior. Justifica-se a escolha do Octave por ele ser um software livre — característica que torna seu uso viável em diferentes instituições de ensino sem a necessidade do emprego de recursos financeiros adicionais —, bem como por ele ser uma ferramenta computacional compatível com diversos sistemas operacionais. Para tanto, fez-se a análise de publicações nacionais e internacionais, na área do ensino de ciências, buscando responder a questões que possibilitassem reconhecer o estado da arte acerca do uso do Octave no ensino de matemática e física. São exemplos de tais questões: (i) qual a natureza desses trabalhos; (ii) a que níveis de ensino estão relacionados; e (iii) quais os conteúdos abordados. Para o levantamento dos dados, selecionou-se revistas de classificação Qualis Capes A1, A2 e B1 durante todo o período de publicação de cada um dos periódicos considerados. Dez publicações, que incluíam trabalhos teóricos, propostas didáticas e práticas desenvolvidas, foram selecionadas e analisadas.
