Resumo: This article presents the full text prepared to support the lecture given during the I Environmental Education Symposium: different perspectives, promoted by the Cruzeiro do Sul University, in October 2019. Through the explanation about the oceans´ value to life on Earth (CO2 reservoir, climate balance and ecosystem services) and the impacts that human activities have caused to this environment (water pollution and acidification, garbage, coastal areas unplanned occupation), it was intended to show how important is  to use the "oceans" subject in environmental education projects that aims to engage people in environmental conservation, recovery and improvement through behavioral change, which promotes a more sustainable use of natural environments.
