Resumo: The research results presented and analyzed in this work were obtained as a part of a more extensive, qualitative, ethnographic and participant research held in a public school of the Municipal Educational System, located in a popular neighborhood in the far east of the city of São Paulo, in September, 2010. The research, integrated to the “ProyectoIberoamericano de Evaluación de ActitudesRelacionadas a la Ciencia, la Tecnología y la Sociedad” was performed for a doctoral thesis in Science and Math Teaching and presented as a central discussion the science teaching situation, aiming to recognize and put in doubt the attitudes of a teacher and his students in the science classes regarding the education offered and the STS perspective. It is analyzed, in this work, the data collected in individual interviews with 24 students which have demonstrated a significant interest of the students towards the STS perspective and the themes/issues that it raises, particularly by the environmental theme, motivated by the students contact with a wider culture, through multiple socio-cultural interactions including family, religious community, television media and one of the Internet social networks. The researched school did not discuss with this culture, remaining distant and alien to the student’s interest.
