Electromagnetism and the anti-hero magneto: a possible approach in High School

Resumo: | In this work we suggest a possible activity to be developed in the classroom of High School Physics. In this activity, we try to relate the powers of the villain "Magneto" (of the movies "X-Men") with concepts of Physics, especially those of classical electromagnetism, for example, the electric current, magnetic field and magnetic flux. With this, we glimpse the possibility that concepts of Physics are discussed more connected to the day-to-day of the students, what could motivate them for the study of this discipline. From selected scenes from one of the films of "X-Men", we develop an idealized, simplified and predominantly quantitative analysis of the powers presented by Magneto. We designed as potential contributions of using this approach in the classroom, besides the student motivation: a) the development of notions such as order of magnitude, relating values of physical quantities to the concrete world; b) developing the ability to estimate values; c) familiarization with the units ofmeasurement of some physical quantities and d) the development of their capabilities for creating explanatory models. |

Nela, procuramos relacionar os poderes do vilão “Magneto” (dos filmes “X-Men”) com conceitos da Física, especialmente aqueles do eletromagnetismo clássico como, por exemplo, os de corrente elétrica, campo magnético e fluxo magnético. Com isso, vislumbramos a possibilidade de que conceitos da Física sejam discutidos de forma mais conectada ao dia-a-dia dos estudantes, o que poderia motivá-los pelo estudo dessa disciplina. A partir de cenas selecionadas de um dos filmes dos X-Men, desenvolvemos uma análise idealizada, simplificada e de cunho predominantemente quantitativo dos poderes apresentados por Magneto.
