Resumo: This paper consists of a literature review and data analysis essay that aims to discusses scientific literacy as a toll and educational strategy for autonomy and citizenship, starting from the conception of science as specific and essential language for the construction of the scientific field and its characterization and that has different complexity levels.  Scientific Literacy designates the process of language acquisition for the construction of a minimum proficiency that allows the understanding of the scientific activity itself, its functioning, mechanisms and meaning. Effective scientific education provides the basic tools for understanding scientific language and contributes for individuals to exercise their citizenship being able to decide on scientific doing in a truly informed way. Without this there is the vitrine effect in which science is spectacularized compromising the personal and socioeconomic development of a subject and his/her community. The consequences range from an impoverished view of the world to difficulties of insertion in the knowledge and information economy.

The consequences range from an impoverished view of the world to difficulties of insertion in the knowledge and information economy.Este artigo  consiste em um ensaio de revisão bibliográfica e análise de dados com o  objetivo discutir a alfabetização científica como ferramenta e estratégia educativa para a autonomia e a cidadania a partir da concepção de ciência enquanto linguagem específica e essencial à construção do campo científico e a sua caracterização e tendo  diferentes níveis de complexidade.  Alfabetização Científica designa o processo de aquisição de linguagem para a construção de uma proficiência mínima que possibilite a compreensão da atividade científica em si,  seu funcionamento, mecanismos e sentido. A educação científica efetiva fornece as ferramentas básicas para a compreensão da linguagem científica e contribui para a que indivíduos exerçam a sua cidadania podendo decidir acerca do fazer científico de modo realmente informado. Sem isso ocorre o efeito vitrine, em que a ciência é espetacularizada e o desenvolvimento pessoal e socioeconômico de um sujeito e sua comunidade é comprometido.
