Normal students, public school education and elite culture: the context of the Escola Normal Catharinense of 1892

Resumo: | The movement for the diffusion of education that took shape in Europe since the 17th century, which was strengthened in the 18th century and enthroned in American societies in the 19th century, announcing the purposes of national states as liberal intensifiers of culture, civility and morality through the teacher training or teaching of first letters in the so-called Normal Schools. In Brazil, and in the particular case here, in Santa Catarina the Escola Normal moved, in the context of the provinces and then the states, between precarious and high hopes manifested in the positions of the intellectual elites and administrative progress and their aspirations for public order. The objective of this work is, from the study that resulted from the Master's Dissertation entitled A Escola Normal Catharinense de 1892: profession and ornament, the school has some characteristics of its organization, as well as aspects of the context of its creation. Two distinctive features are highlighted: the formative elements of the course with specificities for the teaching of first letters and the attachment to general knowledge as an ornament of the culture of the elites and for the elites offered by the same school. The revisit to the text of the dissertation comprises the resumption of the readings of the bibliographic reference that served as a source for the articulation with the documentary material raised in the Public Archive of the State of Santa Catarina about the Normal and Public School in the Province and in the State. It also includes the re-reading of excerpts from the reports and their comparison with new bibliographic references. |

En Brasil, y en el caso particularizado aquí, en Santa Catarina, la Escuela Normal se movía, en la coyuntura de las provincias y luego de los estados, entre estructuras precarias y grandes esperanzas manifestadas en las posiciones de las élites intelectuales y administrativas y sus aspiraciones para el progreso y el orden público. El objetivo de este trabajo es, a partir del estudio que resultó de la Tesis de Maestría titulada A Escola Normal Catharinense de 1892: profesión y ornamento, resumir algunas características organizativas de esta escuela, así como aspectos del contexto de su creación. Se destacan dos rasgos distintivos: los elementos formativos del curso con las especificidades para la enseñanza de las primeras letras; el apego a los saberes generales como ornamento de la cultura de las élites y para las élites que ofrece la misma escuela. La revisión del texto de la disertación comprende la reanudación de las lecturas de la referencia bibliográfica que sirvió de fuente para la articulación con el material documental levantado en el Archivo Público del Estado de Santa Catarina, sobre la Escuela Normal y la educación pública en el Provincia y en el Estado. También incluye la relectura de extractos de informes oficiales y su comparación con nuevas referencias bibliográficas.O movimento pela difusão do ensino que se desenhou na Europa desde o século XVII se fortaleceu no século XVIII e se enraizou para as sociedades americanas no século XIX, anunciava os propósitos dos estados nacionais em fortalecer preceitos liberais de cultura, civilidade e moralidade pela via da formação de professores para o magistério das primeiras letras nas chamadas Escolas Normais. No Brasil, e no caso particularizado aqui, em Santa Catarina, a Escola Normal se movia, na conjuntura das províncias e depois dos estados, entre precárias estruturas e grandes esperanças manifestas nos posicionamentos das elites intelectuais e administrativas e suas aspirações de progresso e ordem pública. O objetivo deste trabalho é, a partir do estudo que resultou da Dissertação de Mestrado intitulada A Escola Normal Catharinense de 1892: profissão e ornamento, retomar algumas características de organização desta escola, assim como aspectos do contexto de sua criação. São destacados dois distintivos: os elementos formativos do curso com as especificidades para o ensino das primeiras letras; e o apego aos conhecimentos gerais como ornamento da cultura das elites e para as elites oferecidos pela mesma escola. A revisita ao texto da dissertação compreende a retomada de leituras do referencial bibliográfico que serviu de fonte para a articulação com o material documental levantado no Arquivo Público do Estado de Santa Catarina, a respeito da Escola Normal e do ensino público na Província e no Estado.
