O objetivo deste estudo é matizar o debate em torno da problemática da educação permanente que, no cotidiano, engendra novos problemas e perspectivas. Inicialmente de maneira sinóptica, analisa-se o contexto histórico em que foi gestada a educação permanente. Ancorado em estudiosos sobre a temática, discute-se a ambivalência da terminologia, a necessidade e a importância da educação permanente na sociedade hodierna e busca-se descortinar verdades sobre esta modalidade de ensino para que o leitor possa construir sua própria cosmovisão. Apresenta uma visão panorâmica dos Programas Universitários da Terceira Idade na América Latina e Caribe, destacando a Universidade Aberta – UNI 3, instituição uruguaia de renome internacional, que promove, fora da universidade tradicional, educação permanente. Por fim, analisa-se os limites e possibilidades dessa forma de educação no contexto da América Latina e Caribe. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Educação Permanente. Educação continuada. América Latina e Caribe. Programas Universitários de Terceira Idade. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the debate about the problematic of permanent education, which, in daily life, engenders new problems and perspectives. The paper begins with a historical analyses of the context in which permanent education was managed. Based on studies about the theme, it discusses the vagueness of the terminology, and the need and importance for permanent education in modern society. It also  seeks to unveil truths about this modality of teaching so that the reader can construct their own world vision. It presents a panoramic view of the University Programs for the Elderly in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting the Open University – UNI 3, an internationally respected  Uruguayan institution that promotes permanent education outside of a traditional university. Finally, the limits and possibilites of this form of education are analyzed in the Latin American and Caribbean context. KEY WORDS: Permanent education. Continuous education.
