Antonin Artaud, Mexico and the Raramuri: racial issues and colonialism in Artaud's travels through Mexico

Resumo: The nine months of Artaud's travels through Mexico, usually treated as a footnote in his biography, need to be seen as more than that: they were a turning point in the direction of his work/life. For Jay Murphy (2017), there would be an Artaud before and another after his journey to Mexico, because we can observe a profound metamorphosis in his work, even if we set his “madness” aside. A paradigm shift that encompasses the evolution of a Theatre of Cruelty towards the concept of the Body without Organs. Within this context, this text first aims to critically present, in a post-colonial perspective, Artaud's intentions in seeking a primordial theatrical language in the Mexican canyons, its limits and possibilities, and secondly, to interrogate how racial issues were problematized in such a quest and how they reverberate through his work and beyond, radically affecting and changing the field of Theatre and Performance Studies.

Sin embargo, este debe ser visto como algo más que eso: fue un momento decisivo para la dirección de su obra/vida. Para Jay Murphy (2017), habría un Artaud antes y otro después de su viaje a México, pues –aunque dejemos de lado su “locura”– podemos observar una profunda metamorfosis en su obra, un cambio de paradigma que engloba la evolución de un Teatro de la Crueldad hacia el concepto de Cuerpo sin Órganos. Por lo tanto, y dentro de este contexto, este texto tiene como objetivo primero presentar críticamente, en una perspectiva poscolonial, las intenciones de Artaud en la búsqueda de un lenguaje teatral primordial en los cañones mexicanos: sus límites y posibilidades; y en segundo lugar, interrogar cómo se problematizaron los temas raciales en tal búsqueda y cómo reverberaron a través de su trabajo y más allá, afectando y cambiando radicalmente el campo de los Estudios de Teatro y Performance.A viagem de nove meses de Artaud através do México, geralmente tratada como uma nota de rodapé em sua biografia, precisa ser vista como sendo mais do que isso: foi um momento decisivo para os rumos de sua obra/vida. Para Jay Murphy (2017), haveria um Artaud antes e outro depois de sua jornada ao México, pois – mesmo que deixemos de lado sua “loucura” – podemos observar uma metamorfose profunda em seu trabalho, uma mudança paradigmática que engloba a evolução de um Teatro da Crueldade em direção ao conceito de Corpo sem Órgãos.
