“Between faces”: the transfiguration of appearance in self-portrait in dialogue with Cindy Sherman

Resumo: This article discusses the transfiguration of appearance in the self-portraits of the series “Between Faces” in a dialogue with the works of the artist Cindy Sherman, as a research problem. The objective is to analyze, in this transfiguration, how the referent, that is, the face, behaves in the modification of appearances. The methodological approach to the creative process is based on Rey's (2002) three dimensions, namely the abstract, the practical and the work in process. From the resulting series of self-portraits an analysis is made establishing relationships with Sherman's works. The results show that the transfiguration of appearance and the deformity hide the "artist's reference" (his face), producing a beauty of another order through which the "artist's reference" manifests itself (the artist's specific way of transfiguring his face in the self-portrait). Conclusively, it is perceived that the first referent is camouflaged with a second identity, which is as much his as the first, and which is only revealed when he commits himself to its transfiguration.

El enfoque metodológico del proceso creativo se basa en las tres dimensiones de Rey (2002), a saber, la abstracta, la práctica y el trabajo en proceso. A partir de la serie de autorretratos resultante se realiza un análisis estableciendo relaciones con la obra de Sherman. Los resultados muestran que la transfiguración de la apariencia y la deformidad ocultan la "referencia del artista" (su rostro), produciendo una belleza de otro orden a través de la cual se manifiesta la "referencia del artista" (la manera específica del artista de transfigurar su rostro en la auto-referencia). En definitiva, se percibe que el primer referente se camufla con una segunda identidad, tan suya como la primera, y que sólo se revela cuando se compromete con su transfiguración.Neste artigo discute-se a transfiguração da aparência nos autorretratos da série “Entre Rostos”, em um diálogo com as obras da artista Cindy Sherman, como problemática de pesquisa. O objetivo é analisar, nessa transfiguração, como o referente, ou seja, o rosto, se comporta na modificação das aparências. A abordagem metodológica do processo criativo está embasada nas três dimensões de Rey (2002), sendo a abstrata, a prática e a da obra em processo. A partir da série resultante de autorretratos faz-se uma análise estabelecendo relações com as obras de Sherman. Os resultados mostram que a transfiguração da aparência e o disforme ocultam o "referente do artista" (seu rosto), produzindo uma beleza de outra ordem pela qual se manifesta o "referente de artista" (modo específico do artista transfigurar seu rosto no autorretrato).
