Resumo: The main chapel of the Church of Nossa Senhora Madre de Deus, located in the city of Recife, was decorated with gilded and polychrome carving that illustrates the sacred art of the eighteenth century in the context of Portuguese America. However, the complete absence of records that indicate the course that marked the making of the art for the temple, the officials involved in these tasks and the dates of execution of the works is noteworthy. In the interest of investigating the ornamental constitution of the chancel and discussing its plastic and aesthetic conformation, this work aimed to analyze the decoration of the main chapel of Madre de Deus. Specifically, it sought to systematize the fundamental stages that marked the modification of its ambience, to broaden the understanding of its history, and to attenuate fractions of the innumerable omissions involving the narrative of religious art in Recife. Sin embargo, despierta la atención la completa ausencia de documentos coevos indicando el curso que marcó la confección del arte para el templo, los hombres involucrados en estas tareas y las fechas de ejecución de los trabajos. Es posible mapear, solamente, informaciones dilucidando que parte de la decoración producida para ese espacio fue destruida por incendio en el año de 1971; identificar fotografías que ilustren cómo fue la decoración expuesta en la capilla mayor antes de ese accidente; conocer los procesos de restauración concluidos en 1983 y 2006, los métodos empleados para la concreción de esos servicios y los resultados obtenidos. Basado en eso, este texto tiene como objetivo analizar la decoración de la capilla mayor de la Madre de Deus, sistematizando las etapas.A capela-mor da Igreja de Nossa Senhora Madre de Deus, situada na cidade do Recife, recebeu ornamentação em talha dourada e policromada que ilustra o quadro da arte sacra setecentista no contexto da América portuguesa. No entanto, desperta atenção a completa ausência de registros coevos que indiquem o decurso que assinalou a confecção da arte para o templo, os oficiais envolvidos nesses afazeres e as datas de execução dos trabalhos. Com o interesse de averiguar a constituição ornamental da referida capela-mor e discorrer sobre sua conformação plástica e estética, este trabalho objetivou analisar a decoração da capela-mor da Madre de Deus. Especificamente, buscou sistematizar as etapas fundamentais que assinalaram a modificação de sua ambiência, ampliar o entendimento de sua história, atenuar fração das inúmeras omissões envolvendo a narrativa da arte religiosa recifense.
