"FORMING THE NURSERY OF GOOD SAILORS": THE COMPANIES OF SEAMEN APPRENTICES IN PARAHYBA AND RIO GRANDE DO NORTE (1871-1890)

Inspired by models from countries like England, France and Russia the Companies for apprentice seamen were created in Brazil. The first one heard of was established in 1840 at the Court. On January 17, 1871, under decree no. 4680, the Companhias de Aprendizes Marinheiros (Companies of Seamen Apprentices) were created in the province of Parahyba and in 1873 in the province of Rio Grande do Norte. We discuss in this article the conditions of creation of these educational spaces in the two provinces and, more specifically, the constitution of a school curriculum intended for the education of those young people. Beyond the disciplines we are interested in grasping the educational practices prescribed for the organization of daily school life and the ways of controlling the subjects who should be instructed and disciplined. Methodologically we analyze the Provincial Presidential Reports and the ones from Ministers of the Navy, where the proposition of "training good seamen and providing a useful education for children exposed to vices and misery" circulated.
