Rivers on the borders of Brazil

Resumo: Throughout history, rivers have had different meanings and uses, ranging from the use of water to quench thirst to irrigation, navigation, or the transport of people and cargo. In addition to these various uses, rivers served as a support to define borders between national States. Their geopolitical meaning arises when they cross national States or when the latter control their source or mouth, requiring agreements and treaties for their use. After the identification of bordering rivers, the next procedure of this study was to analyze the density of their course, the location of the source and mouth, the most frequent uses, and the role played by the Navy in the defense and safety of navigation. Finally, this article addresses the rivers from a geopolitical perspective, highlighting the many particular aspects of some rivers that are on the borders between Brazil and other countries and how they took a role in the process of delimiting the borders of Brazil.

Además de estos diversos usos, los ríos sirvieron como soporte para definir fronteras entre los Estados nacionales. Su significado geopolítico surge cuando atraviesan Estados nacionales o cuando éstos controlan su naciente o desembocadura, requiriendo acuerdos y tratados para su uso. Tras la identificación de los ríos fronterizos, el siguiente procedimiento de este estudio fue analizar la densidad de su curso, la ubicación de la naciente y la desembocadura, los usos más frecuentes y el papel que juega la Armada en la defensa y seguridad de la navegación. Finalmente, este artículo aborda los ríos desde una perspectiva geopolítica, destacando los muchos aspectos particulares de algunos ríos que se encuentran en las fronteras entre Brasil y otros países y cómo jugaron un papel en el proceso de delimitación de las fronteras brasileñas.Au cours de l’histoire, les fleuves ont eu différentes significations et utilisations, allant de l’utilisation de l’eau pour étancher la soif à l’irrigation, la navigation ou le transport de personnes et de marchandises. En plus de ces divers usages, les fleuves ont servi de support pour définir les frontières entre les États nationaux. Leur importance géopolitique survient lorsqu’ils traversent des États nationaux ou lorsqu’ils contrôlent la source ou l’embouchure, nécessitant des accords et des traités pour leur utilisation. Après l’identification des fleuves frontaliers, la démarche suivante de cette étude consistait à analyser la densité de son cours, la localisation de la source et de l’embouchure, les usages les plus fréquents et le rôle de la Marine dans la défense et la sécurité de la navigation. Enfin, cet article aborde les fleuves d’un point de vue géopolitique, en soulignant les nombreux aspects particuliers de certains fleuves qui se trouvent aux frontières entre le Brésil et d’autres pays et comment ils ont joué un rôle dans le processus de délimitation des frontières brésiliennes.Ao longo da história, os rios tiveram diversos significados e usos, desde o emprego das águas para saciar a sede até a irrigação, a navegação ou o transporte de pessoas e de cargas. Além desses diferentes usos, os rios serviram como suporte para definir fronteiras entre Estados nacionais. Seu significado geopolítico surge quando eles atravessam os Estados nacionais ou quando se tem o controle da nascente ou da foz, exigindo acordos e tratados para seu uso. Após a identificação dos rios fronteiriços, o procedimento seguinte deste estudo foi analisar a densidade de seu curso, a localização da nascente e da foz, os usos mais frequentes e a atuação da Marinha na defesa e segurança da navegação.
