Political representation of morality:: religious city councilors seeking reelection

Resumo: This article analyzes the dynamics of political representation among players in the religious field in contemporary Brazil. To do this, it takes as a corpus of analysis the 2020 reelection campaigns for the City Council of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, of two city councilors: the evangelical woman committed to the Assemblies of God, Priscila Costa, member of the Christian Social Party (Partido Social Cristão [PSC]), and the charismatic Catholic man Jorge Pinheiro, member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira [PSDB]). By addressing themes from the moral agenda (abortion, family, gender ideology, among others), the  two city councilors have been effective cases of conservative mobilization of fractions of society that take some religious grammar as a basis to legitimize their action in the public sphere. Analyzing their legislative works and, above all, their campaign platforms on social media, we present a view of the relationship between religion and politics in the contemporary Brazilian scenario based on the competition for Legislative Power in the capital city of the State of Ceará.

Para ello, toma como corpus de análisis las campañas de reelección en 2020 para la Cámara Municipal de Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil, de dos concejalas: la mujer evangélica comprometida con las Asambleas de Dios, Priscila Costa, miembro del Partido Social Cristiano (Partido Social Cristão [PSC]), y el hombre carismático católico Jorge Pinheiro, miembro del Partido de la Social Democracia Brasileña (Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira [PSDB]). Al abordar temas de la agenda moral (aborto, familia, ideología de género, entre otros), los dos concejalas han sido casos efectivos de movilización conservadora de fracciones de la sociedad que toman como base alguna gramática religiosa para legitimar su acción en la esfera pública. Analizando sus trabajos legislativos y, sobre todo, sus plataformas de campaña en las redes sociales, presentamos una visión de la relación entre religión y política en el escenario brasileño contemporáneo a partir de la competencia por el Poder Legislativo en la ciudad capital del estado de Ceará.Cet article analyse les dynamiques politiques de la représentation politique des acteurs du champ religieux au Brésil contemporain. Pour ce faire, il prend comme corpus d’analyse les campagnes de réélection en 2020 pour le Conseil Municipal de Fortaleza, Ceará, Brésil, de deux conseillers: la femme évangélique engagée aux Assemblées de Dieu, Priscila Costa, membre du Parti Social Chrétien (Partido Social Cristão [PSC]), et l’homme catholique charismatique Jorge Pinheiro, membre du Parti Social-Démocrate Brésilien (Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira [PSDB]). En abordant des thèmes de l’agenda moral (avortement, famille, idéologie du genre, entre autres), les deux  parlementaires municipaux ont été des cas efficaces de mobilisation conservatrice de fractions de la société qui prennent une grammaire religieuse comme base pour légitimer leur action dans la sphère publique. En analysant leurs travaux législatifs et, surtout, leurs plateformes de campagne sur les réseaux sociaux, nous présentons une vision de la relation entre religion et politique dans le scénario brésilien contemporain à partir de la compétition pour le Pouvoir Législatif dans la capitale de l’État de Ceará.Este artigo analisa as dinâmicas da representação política de atores do campo religioso no Brasil contemporâneo. Para isso, toma como corpus de análise as campanhas de reeleição para a Câmara Municipal de Fortaleza, em 2020, de dois parlamentares: a evangélica da Assembleia de Deus, Priscila Costa, do Partido Social Cristão (PSC), e o católico carismático Jorge Pinheiro, do Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). Acionando temas da agenda moral (aborto, família, ideologia de gênero dentre outros), os dois vereadores se postaram como casos efetivos de mobilização conservadora de frações da sociedade a partir de uma gramática religiosa a legitimar a atuação na esfera pública.
