Resumo: There are many English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks used by several educational institutions around Brazil and around the world. Most of them are centered on Communicative Approach, which, in its turn, is guided by linguistic functionalism. However, some discussions about the authenticity of the texts present in such manuals seem to point out to questions associated with the relationship between text and context. Thus, this work, which is based on Corpus Linguistics and Systemic Functional Linguistics, more specifically, on concepts, such as lexicogrammatical choices, context of culture, as well as context of situation, aims to investigate the first oral comprehension and oral production tasks belonging to seven English teaching manuals published throughout the recent three decades in order to check how their lexicogrammatical choices, a text aspect, are treated in relation to their context of use. The results point out that, along these decades, some nonsystematic advances have occurred in the aforementioned manuals, what puts in evidence the English teacher’s role as someone who needs to use them in a critical way. Besides, this work also points out to the importance of Corpus Linguistics as an essential tool to foster the planning and performance of tasks that are part of such manuals.

Besides, this work also points out to the importance of Corpus Linguistics as an essential tool to foster the planning and performance of tasks that are part of such manuals.São vários os manuais de língua inglesa que circulam atualmente entre as instituições de ensino ao redor do Brasil e do mundo.
