Resumo: The Imperial Instituto dos Surdos-Mudos was founded in 1857 in Rio de Janeiro and aimed to “regenerate”, instruct and prepare deaf people for a job. This institution operated as a boarding school and throughout the 19th century, through its regiments, it developed a pedagogical and rehabilitation proposal. In the Imperial period, one of the institute's managers was Dr. Tobias Rabello Leite, an influential physician. Therefore, the objective is to analyze the medical records of the Imperial Instituto dos Surdos-Mudos, from 1857 to 1889, to understand the general state of health of the students, the causes of deafness and the sanitary measures adopted and the effective role of the doctor. This study has a qualitative approach and is of the documentary type. Through the analyzed corpus, it can be seen that the institution embraced the precepts of hygienism and that the doctor's performance extrapolated his functions.

No período Imperial, um dos gestores do instituto foi o Dr. Tobias Rabello Leite, um influente médico. Assim sendo, o objetivo é analisar os registros médicos do Imperial Instituto dos Surdos-Mudos, no período de 1857 a 1889, para compreender qual era o estado geral de saúde dos alunos, as causas da surdez, as medidas sanitárias adotadas e o papel efetivo do médico. Este estudo possui uma abordagem qualitativa e é do tipo documental.
