“Let’s be patriots”: a study of Brazilian text books (1889-1971)

Resumo: | This paper seeks to reconstitute reading practices and analyze the contribution of Brazilian textbooks in the dissemination of an ideal of society after the establishment of the First Brazilian Republic. In order to clarify the multiple meanings of reading, the theoretical-methodological foundations of cultural history and history of school subjects are the means by which the writing of this study will be followed. A survey of textbooks for the former primary education in the Biblioteca do Livro Didático at FE-USP was carried out and operational categories were necessary to guide the research. It was concluded that the analyzed sources partially reveal the functioning of primary education, as they point to the aim of civilizing childhood, by inculcating patterns of shame necessary for a nation that was consolidating. |

De modo a esclarecer os múltiplos sentidos da leitura, os fundamentos teórico-metodológicos da história cultural e das disciplinas escolares são o meio pelo qual será trilhada a escrita do presente estudo. Foi realizado o levantamento de livros de leitura destinados ao antigo ensino primário presentes na Biblioteca do Livro Didático da FE-USP e foram elencadas categorias operatórias para direcionar a pesquisa.
