Nísia Floresta and the female education in Brazil (19th Century)

Resumo: The norte-riograndense, Dionísia Gonçalves Pinto, known as Nísia Floresta, it’s written in historiography by her actions toward the female education in Brazil, during the 19th Century. In this context, the school education for women was a privilege for a small part of the women, in other words, the ones who came from wealthy families. Considering that Nísia Floresta, in this period, wrote books, articles for newspapers and founded a school for girls in Rio de Janeiro, called the Augusto School, therefore we aim to discuss the acting and ideas of Nísia Floresta toward the female education in Brazil. Thus, this study is inserted in the interface of the history of education and history of women. Newspapers, pedagogical prints, writtings and laws, constitutes the research source. The Augusto School had as its flag to equate the education of boys and girls, which is the recurring ideia in Nísia Floresta’s writing. Therefore, to know this intellectual it’s to know how it happened the history of female education in Brazil and the battles foughts so that women could have access to it.

Neste contexto, a educação escolar destinada às mulheres era privilégio de uma pequena parcela das mulheres, ou seja, as que eram oriundas de famílias abastadas. Considerando que Nísia Floresta, neste período, escreveu livros, artigos para jornais e fundou um Colégio para meninas no Rio de Janeiro, o Colégio Augusto, objetivamos discutir a atuação e as ideias de Nísia Floresta à educação feminina no Brasil. Por tal, este estudo insere-se na interface da história da educação e história das mulheres. Jornais, impressos pedagógicos, escritos de Nísia Floresta e leis se constituem enquanto fonte de pesquisa. O Colégio Augusto tinha como propósito equiparar a educação de meninos e meninas, sendo esta uma das ideias recorrentes nos escritos de Nísia Floresta.
