Nísia Floresta and the female education in Brazil (19th Century)

The norte-riograndense, Dionísia Gonçalves Pinto, known as Nísia Floresta, it’s written in historiography by her actions toward the female education in Brazil, during the 19th Century. In this context, the school education for women was a privilege for a small part of the women, in other words, the ones who came from wealthy families. Considering that Nísia Floresta, in this period, wrote books, articles for newspapers and founded a school for girls in Rio de Janeiro, called the Augusto School, therefore we aim to discuss the acting and ideas of Nísia Floresta toward the female education in Brazil. Thus, this study is inserted in the interface of the history of education and history of women. Newspapers, pedagogical prints, writtings and laws, constitutes the research source. The Augusto School had as its flag to equate the education of boys and girls, which is the recurring ideia in Nísia Floresta’s writing. Therefore, to know this intellectual it’s to know how it happened the history of female education in Brazil and the battles foughts so that women could have access to it.
