LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE IN A MULTILINGUAL CONTEXT: A CASE STUDY IN MIRANDA DO DOURO (PORTUGAL)

In this work, we present a case study about the Linguistic Landscape, in the Portuguese city of Miranda do Douro, located on the Spanish border of Castilla y León. For that, we anchor ourselves in studies of the Linguistic Landscape Landry and Bourhis (1997), Pan (2007), in multilingualism Aronin and Singleton (2008), Lewis (2009) and in contact languages Klee and Lynch (2009), Juergensmeyer and Anheier, (2012), among others. This investigation uses, as analysis data, official (top down) and unofficial (bottom down) images located on the public roads of the city, displayed through Google Street View – 2023 and aims to reflect the Linguistic Landscape as one of the instruments that can help in the sociolinguistic diagnosis of the communicative repertoires of the speakers of the community and the status of languages ​​in this border region. In addition, we propose to think of the landscape as an important resource for the promotion of the Mirandese language, a minority language, made invisible by the hegemony of the official languages ​​(Portuguese and Spanish). The analysis of these images, based on the motivations for their production, suggested that the Linguistic Landscape reveals the absence of an identity and linguistic representation of the Mirandese community.
