Resumo: The genus Physalis exhibits biotechnological potential. Its pleasant taste, diversified use, nutritional and therapeutic value and good performance in hot dry regions have increased cultivation of the fruit in several countries. In order to expand the planting of these fruit trees in Brazil, it is important to understand the influence of soil and climate conditions on the physical and physicochemical traits of the fruits, since environmental conditions during their development have a significant effect on their attributes during maturation, yield and seed vigor. As such, the aim of this study was to monitor the maturation of two varieties (purple and green) of P. ixocarpa and P. peruviana, via physical and physicochemical characterization over the course of their development under the soil and climate conditions of Feira de Santana, Bahia state, Brazil. The physiological quality of the seeds was also assessed during the developmental stages of the fruit. In order to meet the aforementioned objectives, crop field and germination tests were conducted at the Forest Garden (HFUEFS) and Seed Laboratory (LAGER), respectively, of Feira de Santana State University (UEFS). The fruits were collected in different maturation stages and the following traits were assessed: color, fresh weight, length, diameter and total soluble solids. Seeds recently taken from the fruits collected in different maturation stages were assessed for water content and dry weight. After drying for 72 hours at ambient condition, the seed germinability and vigor were determined using the germination test and seedling emergence. Changes in fruit traits follow the same trend over the course of maturation in the two varieties of P. ixocarpa assessed, exhibiting better traits when the calyx is green with dry parts, completely expanded and ruptured. The growing season had a significant effect on fruit traits and seed maturation, and should occur between May and August in Feira de Santana, Bahia. The primary physical and physiological changes in the maturation of P. peruviana fruits occurred up to stage 3. This coincides with the maximum physiological quality of the seeds. However, fruits with the traits required for commercial purposes should be harvested when the fruit and calyx are totally yellow.

Os frutos de espécies do gênero por seu sabor agradável, diversidade de uso, valor nutricional e terapêutico, e por demonstrar desempenho interessante em regiões quentes e secas, tem aumentado o cultivo em vários países. Para expandir o plantio desta espécie frutífera no Brasil, o entendimento acerca da influência das condições edafoclimáticas durante o cultivo nas características físicas e físico-químicas dos frutos é necessário, pois as condições ambientais durante o seu desenvolvimento têm relevante influência nos atributos dos frutos ao longo da maturação, na produtividade e vigor das sementes. Diante do exposto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi acompanhar a maturação dos frutos de duas variedades (‘roxa’ e ‘verde’) de P. ixocarpa e de P. peruviana por meio da caracterização física e físico-química dos mesmos ao longo do seu desenvolvimento nas condições edafoclimáticas de Feira de Santana – BA. Além disso, também avaliou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes durante os estádios de desenvolvimento do fruto. Para atender aos objetivos descritos, foram realizados ensaios de cultivo em campo no Horto Florestal (HFUEFS) e de germinação no Laboratório de Sementes (LAGER) da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS) na, Bahia. Os frutos foram coletados em diferentes estádios de maturação e foram avaliadas as seguintes características: cor, massa fresca, comprimento, diâmetro e teores de sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos. As sementes coletadas em diferentes estádios de maturação foram avaliadas quanto ao teor de água e massa de matéria seca. A germinabilidade e o vigor das sementes foram verificados por meio de teste de germinação e emergência de plântulas. Observou-se que as modificações nas características dos frutos seguem mesma tendência ao longo da maturação nas duas variedades de P. ixocarpa avaliadas, observando-se as melhores características para a colheita dos frutos quando o cálice está verde com partes secas, completamente expandido e rompido. A época de cultivo teve efeito significativo nas características dos frutos e no processo de maturação das sementes devendo este ser realizado nas condições ambientais do período de maio a agosto para a região de Feira de Santana-BA. As principais mudanças físicas e fisiológicas na maturação dos frutos de P. peruviana ocorreram até o estádio 3. Este coincide com a máxima qualidade fisiológica das sementes.
