Design management on Return on Investment (ROI): a theoretical-conceptual review

Resumo: This paper presents a theoretical-conceptual review that aims to discuss the integration of two themes: design management and return on investment (ROI). The study is motivated by the realization that, despite the positive impact of the design activities for the companies, managers claim there is still a communication deficit between designers (qualifiers) and executives (quantifiers). In this sense, researchers and designers have struggled to reinforce the value of design in business. The method adopted is a combination of systematic and narrative bibliographical reviews, resulting in a theoretical framework that aims to support the objective of this study. Finally, measuring the impact of design management on ROI is complex. Gaps are pointed at the multifaceted value of the design process.

O estudo é motivado pela constatação de que, apesar dos resultados positivos do impacto que as atividades de design geram para as empresas, gestores alegam existir ainda um déficit na comunicação entre designers (qualificadores) e executivos (quantificadores). Dessa forma, pesquisadores e designers buscam meios para validar o valor do design nos negócios. O método adotado apoia-se em uma revisão bibliográfica integrativa (revisão bibliográfica sistemática com uma revisão bibliográfica narrativa), apresentando como resultado um quadro teórico qual visa fomentar o objetivo deste estudo. Finalmente, a mensuração do impacto da gestão de design no ROI se mostra complexa.
