Resumo: | Fungi, yeasts, bacteria and flagellates of internal tissues from healthy plants are called endophytic microorganisms. The endophytic microorganisms and plants relationships are asymptomatic and nonpathogenic. This symbiotic association provides nutrition, protection, survival for the microorganism and its dissemination through seeds. For the plant this relationship provides growth, tolerance to insects and herbivores, and disease resistance. The endophytes are important because of their potential for increasing agricultural productivity. Many species of endophytes show potential for being used in pharmaceutic and pesticide industries, and as genetic vectors. |

Fungos, leveduras, bactérias e flagelados associados a células de tecidos internos de plantas saudáveis são chamados microorganismos endofíticos. A relação estabelecida entre o microorganismo endofítico e a planta é não patogênica e assintomática. Esta associação simbiótica provê ao microorganismo nutrição, proteção, sobrevivência e disseminação via semente e ao hospedeiro crescimento, tolerância a insetos e animais herbívoros e resistência a doenças. Os endofíticos são importantes peio potencial de exploração oferecido em função do aumento na produtividade agrícola. Várias espécies selecionadas de endofíticos apresentam potencial para emprego nas indústrias farmacêutica e de defensivos agrícolas, além da utilização como vetores genéticos.
