Youth, education, and the challenge of living under socio-economic inequality in a multicultural Millieu in Latin America

Resumo: Again and again Latin American youth are claimed to be the population sector destined to lead and promote the development of a new society, while often forgetting the objective disponibility of resources and tools, both material and symbolic, to attain such goals. The growing poverty, the increasing social inequality, unemployment and the social marginalization, present to the current generation a new scenery full of restrictions, uncertainties and risks. Here I present a critical analysis on the socio-historical context in which the educational politics for the youth is framed and its relevance for the programs and proposition which are assumed to favor the participation of the youth in a socio-economical development in a multi-cultural environment.

Here I present a critical analysis on the socio-historical context in which the educational politics for the youth is framed and its relevance for the programs and proposition which are assumed to favor the participation of the youth in a socio-economical development in a multi-cultural environment.Recurrentemente en América Latina se alude a los jóvenes como un sector estratégico destinado a encauzar y promover el desarrollo de las sociedades, muchas veces sin considerar la disposición objetiva de medios y herramientas materiales y simbólicas necesarias para concretar este magno propósito. El ápice alcanzado por la pobreza, la exacerbaciónde las desigualdades sociales, el incremento del índice de desempleo y la progresiva expansión de la exclusión socioeconómica ha abierto para las nuevas generaciones un escenario plagadode restricciones, incertidumbres y riesgos. El presente artículo se propone aproximar una lectura crítica a cerca del contexto socio histórico en el que se sitúa la política educativa destinada a los jóvenes para indagar posteriormente sobre la pertinencia de sus propuestas y programas de formación orientados –supuestamente– a favorecer la participación de los jóvenes en contextos de pluralidad cultural y restricción socioeconómica.Recorrentemente na América Latina, a juventude é referida como um setor estratégico destinado a canalizar e promover o desenvolvimento das sociedades, muitas vezes sem considerar a provisão objetiva de meios e ferramentas materiais e simbólicos necessários para atingir esse grande propósito. O ápice alcançado pela pobreza, a exacerbação das desigualdades sociais, o aumento da taxa de desemprego e a progressiva expansão da exclusão socioeconômica abriram um cenário repleto de restrições, incertezas e riscos para as novas gerações.
