Immigration, illiteracy and common schooling in the department Villaguay, Entre Ríos (1895-1914)

Resumo: This case study concerns the relationship between immigration, schooling and literacy in a department of the Argentine province of Entre Ríos between 1895 and 1914. During that period the province of Entre Rios was the theater of public policies that stimulated agrarian colonization and the department under analysis, Villaguay, had the particularity of attracting an important mass of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, at that time under the tsarist regime. This process was organized by the Jewish Colinization Association and strongly impacted the department, among other aspects, in the educational sector by providing almost half of the educational offer in the department in the period. Through the census records of 1895 we carry out a sociodemographic evaluation of migrations and their relationship with literacy on the population on which a series of educational policies will be applied. From provincial statistics we have followed the evolution of the implementation of policies and with the published data of the 1914 census we can infer an evaluation of the results and notice the tensions between the provincial and national state by reading them.

Durante ese período la provincia entrerriana fue teatro de políticas públicas que estimulaban la colonización agraria y el departamento bajo análisis, Villaguay, tuvo la particularidad de atraer a una importante masa de inmigrantes judíos de la Ucrania, por entonces bajo el régimen zarista. Este proceso fue organizado por Jewish Colinization Association e impactó fuertemente en el departamento, entre otros aspectos, en el educativo al brindar casi la mitad de la oferta educativa en el departamento en el período. Mediante las cédulas censales de 1895 realizamos una evaluación sociodemográfica de las migraciones y su relación con la alfabetización sobre la población sobre la que se aplicarán una serie de políticas públicas educativas. A partir de estadísticas provinciales hemos seguido la evolución de la implantación de las políticas y con los datos publicados del censo de 1914 podemos inferir una evaluación de los resultados y advertir las tensiones entre el estado provincial y el nacional por la lectura de los mismosEste estudo de caso refere-se sobre a relação entre imigração, escolarização e alfabetização em um departamento da província argentina de Entre Ríos entre 1895 e 1914. Este processo foi organizado pela Jewish Colinization Association e teve um grande impacto no departamento, entre outros aspectos, na educação, oferecendo quase metade da oferta educacional no departamento no período. Mediante as cédulas censais de 1895 realizamos uma avaliação sociodemográfica das migrações e sua relação com a alfabetização sobre a população sobre a que se aplicará uma série de políticas públicas educativas.
