Resumo: In one of several interviews in which he discusses his dissatisfaction with the philosophical horizon of his student days, dominated by Marxism, phenomenology and existentialism, Foucault makes the following statement: "For me, the break came first from Waiting for Godot, by Beckett, a breathtaking performance." My aim in this text is to lay the groundwork for understanding how it is possible for a work of literature to have such an effect - that is, to force us to think otherwise. Is it really possible for works of literature to change the people who read them? Or, to give this question a slightly different focus, are people able to change themselves through their literary readings?
