Resumo: The purpose of this article is to show how the enlightened criollos of Lima, built in the pages of the newspaper Mercurio Peruano (1791-1795) an image of a larger Peru that included unknown regions beyond the Andes: the so called Ucayali country. To achieve such a purpose, the mercurists found in the records of the Franciscan missionaries of the 90s, the experience and description that were present in their epistemological program. Applying an editorial intervention that we will call here “transliteration”, the Ucayali, Huallaga, rivers and its tributaries appeared in the pages of the Mercurio illuminated by the lights of the Enlightenment.
