The Brazilian Theater’s Attempts to Modernize its Scene

Resumo: The Brazilian theater’s modernization didn’t originated exclusively from the performance of Nelson Rodrigues’ Vestido de Noiva [Dress of a Bride] (1943), but was the result of several attempts to renewal the national scene. During the thirties, different writers experienced their pens in the dramaturgical field, based on European current ideas and philosophies. This paper’s purpose is to show how some of these writers were aware that the Brazilian theater needed a play that should be as modern and as good as the rest of the country’s literature; how they tried to write it; and how they failed.

Durante a década de 1930, autores diversos lançaram-se a várias experiências no campo dramatúrgico, embasados em correntes e filosofias que estavam em voga na cena européia.
