Resumo: These notes set out to update the interfaces between literature and journalism today by means of examining the publishing context of Carolina Maria de Jesus’s best-seller, Quarto de Despejo: diário de uma favelada (1960) [Child of the dark]. Light is shed on the specific relations between the press and the female black writer to better assess her ‘exile’ after striking sales records. Her unedited diaries are privileged sources to these considerations which also resort to a synthesis of the mainstream narrative traditions inBrazil(Candido: 2003). Limits to the literary and the journalistic territories emerge as politically conditioned by a gender-class-color tripod. ‘Gender’ is also double-folded onto [1] discursive (fiction-non-fiction) and [2] social (male/female) axes, which rule hierarchies in literary and journalistic institutions.

Busca-se nas relações específicas entre a imprensa e a escritora negra melhor compreensão para seu 'desaparecimento' meteórico em seguida a seus recordes estrondosos de venda. Seus diários não editados constituem fonte privilegiada para estas reflexões, que recorrem ainda ao exame das tradições narrativas dominantes no Brasil (Candido 2003). Desvelam-se demarcações dos campos jornalístico e literário, politicamente condicionadas pelo tripé gênero-classe-cor.
