Resumo: We aim in this work to analyze some cronicas written by Machado de Assis, in which the condition of the Black is evidenced after liberty granted by a royal decree in May 13, 1888. In these cronicas, all the wit of the author is present, because he shows different stories about Black people who were granted liberty but didn´t get to have it, due to the ignorance of their rights or due to their own desire, considering that many of them didn´t know what to do with this liberty. Liberty was given to Blacks, but somehow it was forgotten to give them also dignity.

Nessas crônicas, toda a genialidade machadiana se encontra presente, pois mostram histórias diferentes de negros que ganharam a liberdade, mas não conseguiram usufruí-la, seja por desconhecimento de seu direito seja por vontade “própria”, já que muito não sabiam o que fazer com essa liberdade.
