Resumo: This article proposes an analysis of the Jorge Icaza’s novel, Huasipungo (Equador). We will examine how the indigenous people (from the Andean region) are represented: in spite of the author’s sympathy towards the fi gure of the Indian, the latter is seen as unable to think or act, and this can be connected with the capacity or incapacity of developing an utopian thought.

We will examine how the indigenous people (from the Andean region) are represented: in spite of the author’s sympathy towards the fi gure of the Indian, the latter is seen as unable to think or act, and this can be connected with the capacity or incapacity of developing an utopian thought.Este ensaio tem como objetivo fazer uma breve análise do romance Huasipungo (1934), do equatoriano Jorge Icaza, levando em conta a forma como os indígenas são nele retratados: se, por um lado, fica explícita a denúncia da exploração sofrida pelos índios da serra andina, por outro, percebe-se a desumanização destes, que se mostram incapazes de refletir sobre a sua própria realidade e de agir em prol de uma transformação.
