Reflections on populism and democracy in Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's thought

Resumo: In this article, we intend to analyze the ideas of populism and democracy in the thought of Ernesto Laclau and Chantau Mouffe. We will present the hypothesis that populism, for both authors, far from being an anti-democratic regime or mode of government, is a political logic that constitutes democracy. To this end, we will present the concept of populism of the two authors just mentioned, seeking to differentiate it from the use given by other social scientists. Furthermore, we will explore their accepted notion of democracy and its differences from the liberal notion.

Presentaremos la hipótesis de que el populismo, para ambos autores, lejos de ser un régimen o modo de gobierno antidemocrático, es una lógica política que constituye la democracia. Para ello, presentaremos el concepto de populismo de los dos autores recién mencionados, buscando diferenciarlo del uso que le dan otros científicos sociales. Además, exploraremos su noción aceptada de democracia y sus diferencias con la noción liberal.Neste artigo, pretendemos analisar as ideias de populismo e democracia no pensamento de Ernesto Laclau e Chantau Mouffe. Apresentaremos a hipótese de que o populismo, para ambos autores, longe de ser um regime ou um modo de governo anti-democrático, é uma lógica política constitutiva da democracia. Para tal, vamos apresentar o conceito de populismo dos dois autores recém-citados, buscando diferenciar do emprego dado por outros cientistas sociais.
