Resumo: This ethnographic report will present the experiences of health professionals at The Napoleon Laureano Hospital with death and the process of dying with cancer patients. It is a hospital ethnography, seeking to contemplate the different categories of experience before the death process. Professionals from various categories of the multidisciplinary team that cares for cancer patients were interviewed, and issues were observed in common in their discourses, when it is directed to the experiences of infant death, the fear of the first dead patient and the techniques with the dead body. In view of the results, it was evident the need for professional training focused on the discussion of the theme of death during the period of academic training, so that the process of dying is a subject discussed not only in the biomedical dimension, but also sociocultural, recognizing the double suffering of the patient and his family as the suffering of the professional in the face of death.
