Empirical and Analytical Categories: Solo Mothers and Female Single Parenthood

In this article, we focus on the analytical impacts of the ways of naming female single parenthood in works that have adhered to the terminology solo mother, widespread on social networks since the 2010s. Based on literature review, covering the period from 2010 to 2019, we argue that the introduction of terminology in academic spaces is based on the experiences of women who are in the places of production of knowledge, especially in initial degrees of training, and who stopped addresing the category single parenting category exclusively as a question related to the “other”, starting to approach it through the perspective of those who experience it. Based on this analysis, we suggest the relevance of problematizing the relationship between the terminologies used by the people themselves to describe their parental experiences, the political-identity dimensions of kinship typologies and the analytical categories mobilized in the research.
