Resumo: | The objective of this work is to analyze the role of Brazil in South America, from a comparative perspective. In this sense, the main characteristics of the Brazilian performance in the region during the period of the Civil-Military Dictatorship and in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are discussed. At the regional level, Brazilian foreign policy and the projection of the country were the subject of intense debate about a so-called Brazilian “sub-imperialism” in Latin America. The first section presents a theoretical debate about the concept of sub-imperialism, based on the formulation undertaken by Marini. Next, the regional projection of Brazil is analyzed at the time of the military regime, period for which the concept of subimperialism was originally thought. Finally, the third section describes the Brazilian foreign policy for South America in the Lula government, pointing out its advances and limitations. |

En ese sentido, se abordan las principales características de la acción brasileña en la región en el período de la Dictadura Cívico-Militar y en el gobierno de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A nivel regional, la política exterior brasileña y la proyección del país fueron objeto de un intenso debate en torno a un llamado “subimperialismo” brasileño en América Latina. La primera sección lleva a cabo un debate teórico sobre el concepto de subimperialismo, a partir de la formulación emprendida por Marini. A continuación, se analiza la proyección regional de Brasil en la época del régimen militar, período para el cual se concibió originalmente el concepto de subimperialismo. Finalmente, la tercera sección describe la política exterior brasileña para América del Sur en el gobierno de Lula, señalando sus avances y limitaciones.O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar uma análise acerca do papel do Brasil na América do Sul, a partir de uma perspectiva comparada. Nesse sentido, abordam-se as principais características da atuação brasileira na região no período da Ditadura Civil-Militar e no governo de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. No âmbito regional, a política externa brasileira e a projeção do país foram tema de intenso debate a respeito de um chamado “subimperialismo” brasileiro na América Latina. A primeira seção realiza um debate teórico acerca do conceito de subimperialismo, tendo como base a formulação empreendida por Marini. A seguir, analisa-se a projeção regional do Brasil à época do regime militar, período para o qual o conceito de subimperialismo foi originalmente pensado.
