Evictions, dispersions, and ethnic-territorial reconfigurations among the Pataxó Hãhãhãi

In the beginning of the 20th century, small groups of Indigenous peoples lived in the woods of the south of Bahia state, Brazil, maintaning almost no contact with white settlers. They were concentrated mostly in the basins of Gongoji, Cachoeira, Pardo and Jequitinhonha Rivers. According to reports written by public officers in charge of Indigenous affairs, those groups had been threatening by diseases, invasions, ill treatment and cultural vulnerability, due to the expansion of the cocoa plantation and, above all, due to the corruption of the Serviço de Proteção aos Índios (SPI) itself. This article aims to present the context of the violent removals faced by the Pataxó Hãhãhãi people, carried out by the State and by public officers oriented by economic interests. Besides considering documents produced by SPI, I rely on ethnographic data, including biographical narratives and interviews that I conducted on the field,willing to unveil the Pataxó Hãhãhãi’s memory.
