Resumo: The present article is a systematical study of two related phenomena concerning to phonetics and phonology, namely diphthong reduction and formation. Although it can be said that diphthongation and its reverse process can count on reasonable bibliography for the contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, the present work intends, nevertheless, to stop the gap on diachronic research about the phenomena. Based on 290 documents written throughout the XIXth Century by members of a black brotherhood, named Sociedade Protetora dos Desvalidos, first established in 1832, in the city of Salvador, Bahia, it aims at bringing new lights on the question.

O evento em torno do qual gravita o presente artigo é um estudo sistemático, numa perspectiva descritivo-interpretativista, de dois fenômenos situados na esfera da fonética/fonologia: trata-se da redução de ditongos, o verso, e da ditongação, o reverso. Fenômenos que já contam com razoável bibliografia para o português brasileiro no sincrônico contemporâneo, o artigo em causa pretende preencher uma lacuna e, ao mesmo tempo, dar alguma nova contribuição sobre esses aspectos, na medida em que lastrearão o referido estudo 290 documentos escritos ao longo do século XIX, no âmbito de uma irmandade negra, a Sociedade Protetora dos Desvalidos, fundada em 1832, por africanos, na cidade de Salvador/BA.
