The use of metaphors in academic Portuguese by undergraduate students: a corpus-based analysis

Resumo: | Research and studies have shown that metaphor plays an important role in academic discourse, which has fueled discussions and reflections about its use (Herrmann, 2013; Gianonni, 2009; Gibbs, 2008; Stefanowitsch; Gries, 2006). Research on this phenomenon is still very incipient concerning Portuguese academic discourse, making necessary a study that investigates the use of metaphors in this sense. Considering this scenario, this research aims to analyze and discuss the use of metaphors in academic Portuguese, in order to promote a characterization of this type of genre, as well as to assist native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese as an additional language in the future. Assuming the Cognitive Linguistics perspective, which understands that the conceptual system of the human being is fundamentally metaphorical in nature (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980), we analyzed a corpus consisting of academic articles published by undergraduate students (native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese) from a university a private university of the South of Brazil. The corpus comprises 30 final papers from two different areas: Communication and Computer Science. From the analysis performed, we could observe that these areas seem to use the metaphors in a differentiated way, with distinct characteristics in each of them. |

Por ello, se han producido discusiones y reflexiones en lo que se refiere a su uso (HERRMANN, 2013; GIANONNI, 2009; GIBBS, 2008; STEFANOWITSCH; GRIES, 2006). En el discurso académico de lengua portuguesa, específicamente, las investigaciones sobre ese fenómeno todavía son incipientes. Al considerar lo expuesto anteriormente, se hace necesario un estudio que investigue el uso de metáforas en este sentido. Desde esa perspectiva, la presente investigación tiene por objetivo analizar y discutir el uso de metáforas en el portugués académico de pregrado, al promover una caracterización de dicho discurso, así como, en el futuro, ayudar hablantes nativos de portugués brasileño y de portugués como idioma adicional que necesitan utilizar ese tipo de género. Desde la perspectiva de la Lingüística Cognitiva, la cual comprende el sistema conceptual del ser humano como fundamentalmente metafórico por naturaleza (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980), hemos analizado un corpus que está constituido por artículos académicos de alumnos de pregrado (hablantes nativos de portugués brasileño), de una universidad privada del sur de Brasil. El corpus investigado está compuesto por treinta trabajos de conclusión de las áreas de Comunicación Social y de las Ciencias de la Computación. A partir del análisis que se ha realizado, hemos observado que tales áreas parecen utilizar las metáforas de maneras distintas, presentando características diferentes en cada una de ellas.Pesquisas e estudos hoje têm demonstrado que a metáfora desempenha um papel importante no discurso acadêmico, o que tem alimentado discussões e reflexões acerca do seu uso (HERRMANN, 2013; GIANONNI, 2009; GIBBS, 2008; STEFANOWITSCH; GRIES, 2006). No discurso acadêmico de língua portuguesa, especificamente, pesquisas sobre esse fenômeno ainda são bastante incipientes, fazendo-se necessário um estudo que investigue o uso de metáforas nesse sentido. Considerando esse panorama, esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar e discutir o uso de metáforas no português acadêmico da graduação, promovendo uma caracterização desse discurso, bem como, futuramente, auxiliar falantes nativos do português brasileiro e de português como língua adicional que necessitam utilizar esse tipo de gênero. Assumindo a perspectiva da Linguística Cognitiva, a qual entende o sistema conceitual do ser humano como fundamentalmente metafórico por natureza (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980), analisamos um corpus constituído por artigos acadêmicos de alunos de graduação (falantes nativos do português brasileiro) de uma universidade privada do Sul do Brasil. O corpus pesquisado compreende 30 trabalhos de conclusão das áreas da Comunicação Social e das Ciências da Computação.
